Black Bamboo, otherwise known as Phyllostachys nigra, has fast become a sought-after plant in the UK. And it’s not just the Pandas that love it! More about Black Bamboo for sale

Interestingly, black Bamboo is part of the Poaceae family, which makes it grass, despite its height and tree-like stability. It’s fast-growing, but not invasive. Most bamboo plants take a year or two to settle and will grow around 90cm each year, up to 6 meters tall.

Planting

Black bamboo is perfect for creating dense walls or natural privacy fences and noise barriers. With so many of us still spending more time at home, privacy has become an important part of our home life. Not only this, but we’re wanting to see instant results and for this reason alone, bamboo really is the right choice. And just like with Olive Trees, this plant can grow in pots and containers as well as in the ground. Black bamboo can grow in full sun or partial shade and loves to be planted in mulch around the base of the plant.

Caring for your plant

Bamboo is pretty low maintenance so if you’re tight on time or energy this is a great option. They love nutrient-dense, well-draining soil and they’re best planted in sheltered areas away from harsh winds. They need minimal pruning and watering only once a week at most unless they’re in a container, in which case they will need more regular watering. With regards to planning bamboo can be planted any time of the year however spring would be ideal.
