About yucca ‘Filifera’

Without a doubt, this plant really is quite special. Yucca filifera is one of the fastest-growing yuccas, native to northern Mexico. It forms a branched tree topped with spear-shaped, upwards-facing leaves with curled filaments that appear as peeling threads from the edges.

And, with so many species of yucca available, you can grow them both indoors and outdoors.

In milder regions it’s perfect for growing in a tropical planting scheme, and provides excellent structural interest. Mature plants bear large clusters of creamy, bell-shaped flowers in early summer.

Caring for Yucca

Grow Yucca filifera in very free-draining soil or compost in a sheltered spot in full sun. Protect from winter wet or grow in a container which you can move indoors in autumn.

Yucca plants only need a small amount of water to get established in the first year after planting. Otherwise, they are very low maintenance, just make sure to avoid fertiliser, irrigation and mulch as these will only harm the plants. The flower stalks should be removed after the blossoms fade and the dead leaves that tend to form at the base of the plants can be removed regularly. If the plant grows too tall you can simply chop the trunk to your desired height – new branches will form beneath it. Is Yucca filifera poisonous?Yucca filifera has no toxic effects reported.

Low maintenance

As we mentioned earlier the biggest benefit of this plant is their incredibly low maintenance qualities. They rarely require pruning. Damaged leaves can be removed when necessary. They’re super hardy so just need well drained soil and sunlight. And, watering is minimal, so this is one plant you’re unlikely to kill when on holiday.
