Lemon Trees

Growing lemon trees can be very rewarding and with the right care and attention can produce an abundance of fruit. However, there are many factors that affect growth including climate, soil, watering, feeding, and protection. Lemon trees are not native to the UK, so they require specific care to thrive in the cooler and less sunny climate. Here are some essential care tips to keep you…

Will a lemon tree survive all seasons?

Lemon trees are native to tropical regions such as the Mediterranean and thrive in warmer climates with plenty of sunlight. Although in the UK, where the climate is considerably cooler, growing a lemon tree requires a suitable microenvironment. This can be achieved by planting the Lemon Tree in a container that can be moved indoors during colder months. Alternatively, position it in a sunny and sheltered spot, such as a conservatory or a south-facing wall.

Why choose a Lemon Tree?

Lemon trees are in fact one of the easiest citrus trees to grow in the UK. Unlike limes, they can withstand much lower temperatures making them easier to thrive. Another wonderful attribute of the lemon tree is the wonderful white fragrant flowers that appear in late winter. And if that’s not reason enough, then the lure of fresh lemons to use in your kitchen should seal the deal. For most Lemon Trees, the fruit ripens at around 12 months, but it will depend on the care that’s been given.

How to care for your Lemon Tree

When growing lemons, patience and consistent care are key to successfully growing fruit in the UK. Here are some top tips:

Climate and Location: Plant in a sunny and sheltered location to receive as much sunlight as possible.

Soil: They prefer well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH around 6-7).

Planting: Ideally plant in spring or early summer to give it time to establish its roots before winter. Make sure the planting hole is deep enough to accommodate the root ball and wide enough for the roots to spread.

Watering: Water the tree regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely between watering.

Feeding: Fertilise your tree with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer).

Pruning: Prune your lemon tree to maintain its shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve airflow.

Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth.

Due to their popularity, lemon trees are great gifts for weddings. You can find out more about our range of Lemon Trees here.
