Trachycarpus fortunei – Mature Hardy Windmill Palm. Delivery included.
The Windmill Palm is widely regarded as the most dependable hardy palm for UK gardens. Introduced to Britain in the Victorian era, Trachycarpus fortunei has proven itself exceptionally resilient in our climate while retaining its distinctly architectural, Mediterranean character.
This mature single-stem specimen provides instant height and presence — ideal for refined courtyard gardens, coastal properties, or structured contemporary planting schemes.
Why This Palm Stands Apart
- One of the hardiest palms suitable for long-term UK planting
- Cold tolerant to approximately -12°C once established
- Wind and coastal resilient
- Elegant fan-shaped foliage with strong architectural form
- Suitable for both traditional and modern garden designs
In favourable conditions, it may produce 20–30cm of trunk growth per season, gradually forming a statuesque focal point.
Unlike mass-produced imports often found in general retail settings, each palm we offer is carefully selected for quality, structure and health — ensuring longevity and impact once planted.
Planting & Positioning
For best results, plant in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. While tolerant of exposure, positioning out of prevailing strong winds will preserve leaf integrity and maintain a refined appearance.
It can be planted at any time of year, though spring and early summer allow for faster root establishment.
When planting:
- Dig a generous hole wider than the root ball
- Soak thoroughly before planting
- Use a free-draining compost mix (John Innes No. 3 blended with grit)
- Water deeply after planting to encourage root development
Regular watering during dry spells will support strong establishment.
Seasonal Interest
Established specimens may produce branched clusters of creamy-yellow flowers in early summer, adding further visual interest and enhancing their exotic character.

Tropical landscapes are lush, colourful, exotic, and bursting with life, and Palm trees are at the very centre. Luckily, they’re not just reserved for tropical climates and desert islands – even old blighty has a love for them. Some wonderful examples of Palms can be found at Kew Gardens.
