Phoenix Canareiensis

The Phoenix Canareiensis is a striking palm tree native to the Canary Islands. This tropical beauty is a feather-type palm, with a stout trunk and straight, narrow, spiky leaves. The elegant fan shapes make this tree a perfect addition to an architectural garden adding high impact and charm. And, despite its Mediterranean roots, it can enjoy life in the UK placed in a sheltered garden position. It can also cope with colder temperatures such as -6°C and is classed as winter hardy. Particularly resistant to drought and salty winds, it makes it the perfect tree for the south coast of the UK.

How to care for a Phoenix Canareiensis

Although these beautiful specimens are extremely low maintenance, if they are placed in full sun they will grow vigorously. Furthermore, they can demand space with theirhuge crown spread that will develop in years to come. And, because they love a sunny position, they’re perfect for patio pots! This exotic plant is so incredibly versatile, it can be planed in pots or in the ground, either way it adds instant tropical beauty. And, unlike the Mediterranean where the phoenix palm can reach the heady heights of around 11m, in the UK it tends to be a more manageable height of around 1.5m. In terms of watering.

When in the best time to plant a phoenix palm?

One of the best things about this tree is the fact you can plant it pretty much anytime. If the soil isn’t frozen or covered with snow, then you can go ahead and plant. However, if you are looking for the ideal time, early spring or late autumn offer optimum results. Just like with most planting, it’s always recommended to soak the root ball thoroughly before planting. Ideally, this should be done the night before to ensure the roots have taken as much water as possible before they’re planted. Then, water the hole thoroughly and once the hole has been backfilled, water again to ensure a good contact between the soil and the roots. In the summer, just like the rest of your garden the phoenix palm will need good watering, ideally a couple of times a week for newly planted palm trees.
