Fig Trees

Growing fig trees can be a rewarding experience, but it does require some attention and care. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to grow a fig tree:

Choose the Right Variety

Select a fig tree variety that is suitable for the UK climate. Some varieties are better suited for colder climates, while others thrive in warmer regions. There is a great selection of fig trees perfect for growing the UK.

Select a Suitable Location

Figs need plenty of sunlight, so choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Also, make sure the location has well-drained soil.

Careful planting

Ideally, spring or autumn is the best time to plant fig trees. First, dig a hole that is about twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Then, add compost or manure to the soil to improve fertility. Lastly, place the fig tree in the hole, ensuring that it’s at the same depth as it was in the container. However, don’t forget to backfill the hole with soil and water thoroughly to settle the soil.

Pruning

Pruning is essential for fig trees as it helps maintain the shape, controls the size, and improves fruit production. And the best time to prune is late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Try to remove dead or diseased branches, as well as any crossing or overcrowded branches. This helps with the overall health and shape of the tree.

Watering and Fertilising

Figs have deep root systems, so water deeply but infrequently. And be careful to only water the tree when the top inch of soil is dry. This is because overwatering can lead to root rot. Fertilise your fig tree in the spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or compost. However, try to avoid too much nitrogen, as it can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruit production.

Harvesting

Figs are ready to harvest when their skin is soft, and they hang low from the branch. They often split when gently squeezed. Occasionally they produce a droplet of sugary liquid from the ‘eye’ at the base. Most fig trees only ripen one crop per year, at the end of summer. Try to harvest figs as soon as they ripen, as they do not continue to ripen once picked.

By following these steps and providing proper care, you can enjoy a healthy and productive fig tree in your garden. Remember that fig trees can take a few years to become fully established and produce abundant fruit, so be patient and consistent with your care.
