Ancient Olive Trees: A Timeless Addition to Modern Gardens
We are delighted to announce the arrival of a new collection of ancient olive trees from our esteemed suppliers in Spain. Ranging in age from 60 to 200 years, these venerable trees not only embody centuries of history but also introduce a distinctive Mediterranean charm to contemporary garden designs. Hand picked by us for their architectural beauty.

The Rise of Olive Trees in Garden Design
In recent years, olive trees have surged in popularity within garden landscapes, a trend significantly influenced by prestigious events like the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. A notable example is the L’Occitane Garden, which has been featured multiple times at the show. In 2010, designer James Towillis crafted a garden that encapsulated the essence of Haute Provence, showcasing aged olive trees amidst aromatic herbs and traditional stone structures. This design aimed to awaken the senses with its bright colours , evocative scents, and the gnarled structural forms of aged olive trees.

Further cementing this trend, the 2016 L’Occitane Garden, designed by James Basson, celebrated the brands 40th anniversary by recreating the beauty of Haute Provence. The garden presented the edge of a lavender field, looking out onto the rolling hills and stunted woodland of Provence, with olive trees playing a central role in evoking the regions landscape.

Award-Winning Gardens Embracing Mediterranean and Xeric Themes
Beyond the Chelsea Flower Show, several acclaimed gardens have embraced Mediterranean palettes and xeric (drought-tolerant) plantings:
Domaine du Rayol, France: Designed by landscape architect Gilles Clement this garden features various global landscapes and a marine garden, highlighting Mediterranean flora. And one of our favourites the Yucca Rostrata. UK hardy, evergreen and great companion planting for Olive trees.

Jardines de Alfabia, Mallorca: A Moorish masterpiece, this garden offers visitors a stroll through landscapes that integrate elements across different architectural styles, showcasing Mediterranean and tropical flora.
Giardini Botanici Hanbury, Italy: Established in 1867, these gardens house an extensive collection of Mediterranean and exotic plants, reflecting the rich biodiversity of the region.
Incorporating Ancient Olive Trees into Your Garden
Integrating ancient olive trees into your garden introduces a sense of history and elegance. Their silvery foliage and gnarled trunks serve as striking focal points, while their resilience makes them suitable for various climates, including the UK increasingly temperate conditions.Although as I write this we are experiencing a particularly cold english winters day. Luckily they can withstand our winters.

Recent observations by the Royal Horticultural Society indicate that warm-climate plants like olive trees are thriving in the UK due to fewer frosts.
At The Norfolk Olive Tree Company, we offer a selection of these majestic trees, each with its unique character. Our team provides expert guidance on planting and care, ensuring that your olive tree becomes a cherished feature in your landscape.
