If you’ve been searching for a truly unique specimen tree for your garden—something architectural, evergreen, steeped in history, and almost impossible to source in the UK—you’ll be delighted to meet our two exceptional Cork Oak trees (Quercus suber). Standing at 3 metres tall (270cm not including pot), and supplied in 35 × 30 cm containers, these beautifully structured trees are among the very few legally importable Cork Oaks currently available in the UK.

Cork Oaks are iconic across the Mediterranean landscape, instantly recognisable for their deeply furrowed, warm-toned bark. And while they are famous for one particular reason—the bark is harvested to make natural corks for wine bottles—the tree itself is equally remarkable as a garden specimen, especially for those who love Mediterranean planting or appreciate rare horticultural treasures.

Why Cork Oaks Are So Difficult to Import
Due to strict plant-health regulations, Cork Oaks can only be imported into the UK if they meet very specific sizing criteria, the most limiting being a trunk girth of no more than 6-8 cm. This rule sits alongside rigorous inspections, traceability requirements and certification from European growers. The aim is to protect both UK oak species and commercial forestry from pests and diseases.

For this reason, mature Cork Oaks—often with thick, characterful trunks—are cannot legally be brought into the UK. Only young, slender trees grown under controlled nursery conditions can pass inspection.
This makes our current pair even more special. They come directly from a specialist nursery in Tuscany, where Cork Oaks thrive in warm, mineral-rich, perfectly draining soils. Trees grown in this region are known for their excellent health, elegant form and naturally good branching habit.

When we say they’re rare… we genuinely mean it.
The Cork Oak: An Evergreen With a Story
Quercus suber isn’t just another evergreen tree—its bark is one of nature’s marvels. The thick, spongy, fire-resistant exterior is harvested every 9–12 years to make:
- Natural wine corks
- Premium cork flooring and insulation
- Sustainable fashion accessories
- Eco-friendly building materials

For wine lovers, the Cork Oak is more than a plant—it’s a symbol of tradition, craftsmanship and the timeless art of winemaking. Having one in your garden is a wonderfully personal nod to this heritage.
Growth Habit in the UK: Mediterranean Charm, British Reliability
Despite its Southern European origins, the Cork Oak performs surprisingly well in many parts of the UK—particularly in mild, coastal or sheltered southern and eastern regions. Once established, it is:
- Evergreen: holding its leathery green leaves year-round
- Drought tolerant: ideal for gravel gardens or low-water planting schemes
- Long-lived: capable of thriving for centuries
- Architectural: with a twisted, sculptural form as it matures
At 3 metres tall, your trees already offer wonderful presence and elegance, creating instant height and drama in the garden.
Who Will Love These Trees?
Wine Enthusiasts
There’s something magical about owning the very tree that gives life to natural wine corks. It’s a living link to vineyards, tradition and craftsmanship.

Collectors of Rare Specimens
Cork Oaks are almost never seen for sale in the UK due to the stringent import rules. For plant collectors, Mediterranean gardeners and lovers of unusual evergreens, these trees are extraordinarily desirable.

Garden Designers
Thanks to their evergreen canopy, textured bark and graceful shape, Cork Oaks work beautifully in:
- Courtyards
- Gravel or dry gardens
- Modern Mediterranean schemes
- Architectural planting
Only Two Available—When They’re Gone, They’re Gone
Because of the import restrictions and the scarcity of suitable young trees, we rarely manage to bring Cork Oaks into the country. These two Tuscany-grown specimens are all we have—and all we expect to have for quite some time.
If you’re looking for a living piece of Mediterranean heritage, an evergreen specimen with sculptural character, or a meaningful tree for a wine lover, these Cork Oaks are a truly special opportunity.
