Hornbeam leaves provide food for many small moth caterpillars and the nut-like seeds are devoured by wood pigeons and the uncommon and elusive hawfinch.
The bark is grey with a silvery tinge, and the leaves produce attractive yellow and orange autumn colours. The female flowers are greenish catkins up to 12cm long and the fruit is a small nut with three-lobed wings to help with wind dispersal.
Pleached Hornbeam
Although it’s deciduous, its rusted leaves hold onto its branches throughout winter giving some year-round cover.
Pleached Hornbeam is particularly suitable for clay/wet soils and will thrive in fully shaded areas. It can withstand windy sites, however Carpinus betulus is not suitable for coastal positions as it won’t tolerate salty air. Hornbeam is wildlife friendly. Its dense and thick foliage makes a perfect nesting site and as it holds its leaves throughout winter, it provides a safe and secure habitat for garden wildlife during the cold season.
Its benefits and multitude of uses have been acknowledged by the Royal Horticultural Society and has been awarded their esteemed Award of Garden Merit.
