Olive Trees – most Frequently Asked Questions

Olive Trees – most Frequently Asked Questions

Olive trees have captivated people’s hearts for centuries with their beauty and resilience. If you’re curious about growing and caring for olive trees, you’re not alone! Here are some of the most common questions people ask about these fascinating trees…

How long do olive trees live?

One of the most amazing things about olive trees is their longevity. Olive trees can live for hundreds, even thousands, of years! Some of the oldest olive trees in the world are believed to be over 2,000 years old. This incredible lifespan is one reason why olive trees are often considered symbols of peace and endurance.

Can I grow an olive tree indoors?

Absolutely! While olive trees typically thrive outdoors in Mediterranean climates, you can successfully grow them indoors with the right care. However, try to choose a smaller specimen if you’re planning to keep it inside. And make sure your olive tree gets plenty of sunlight – at least six hours a day. Place it near a south-facing window, and don’t forget to turn the pot regularly so all sides of the tree get equal light. Mist regularly too to keep your tree happy and healthy.

How often should I water my olive tree?

Olive trees in the ground are drought-tolerant once they’re established, but freshly planted trees will need frequent watering whilst they establish. Generally, for potted olives soak your tree once a week, making sure the soil has good drainage.

Do olive trees need a lot of sunlight?

Yes, olive trees love sunlight! They thrive in full sun, which means they need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to thrive. Having said that our olives thrive in our westerly aspect with very low light in winter. If you’re growing an olive tree indoors, ensure it gets as much natural light as possible.

What kind of soil is best for olive trees?

Olive trees prefer well-drained soil. They don’t do well in heavy, clay soils that retain too much water. However, if you do have clay soil you can break it down with grit and soil. If you’re planting an olive tree in a pot, use a high-quality potting mix with added sand and olive tree feed to improve drainage.

Can olive trees survive winter?

Olive trees are very hardy and will cope with cold weather down to -16/-18. They may well lose some leaves but come the spring and some TLC they will bounce back.

Do olive trees need to be pruned?

Pruning helps keep your olive tree healthy and productive. It’s best to prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth starts. Firstly, remove any dead or diseased branches, then thin out the canopy to allow light and air to the inner branches. Regular pruning encourages better fruit production and helps maintain the tree’s shape.
