Yucca Rostrata

The iconic Yucca Rostrata, also known as the beaked Yucca or Yucca linearis is an evergreen shrub native to America and Mexico. This impressive hardy plant boasts a dense crown of silvery-blue foliage and distinguished, yellow-edged leaves. Often, the Yucca Rostrata is used as an ornamental plant in a border or container, creating a stunning focal point or accent for any garden. 

Where do Yucca Rostrata like to live?

Ideally somewhere nice and sunny, either south or west-facing in full sun, or in a border at the back. They are used to dry, arid climates, so the more sun the better! Yucca prefers well-drained soil and requires minimal maintenance once established. And, they have a hardiness rating of H5, making this an incredibly hardy plant for your garden. However, it’s worth noting to shelter during extremely cold weather to protect from frost.

How tall do Yucca rostrata grow?

One of the many reasons these plants are used as architectural plants is their size. Once fully grown they can reach between 2-4m high and 1-3m wide. Better still, they require no pruning so you can quite literally plant, water, and leave to mature! When it comes to growth, soil plays a huge part. We recommend mixing several inches of well-aged compost into the soil to enrich it, along with peat moss for drainage.

If you have planted your Yucca in a border, then asters and grasses are perfect for a sunny landscape. Also, Tiger Lilies, Sedum, Rudbeckia, Sage, and Yarrow all thrive in similar conditions and bloom at the same time as Yucca rostrata.
